Masaka Farmers Urged By President Museveni To Focus On Value Addition

President Yoweri Museveni at Kyesiiga Green Village farming Center in Masaka

At the Kyesiiga Green Village farming center in Lwemonde village, Kyesiima parish, and Kyesiiga sub county in Masaka District, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni visited and promised help.

He promised to provide them all the assistance they need, including a Canter Truck to aid them in farming tasks like moving their harvest from the gardens to the market.

A team from the Kyesiiga Green Village farming center led by Kabito James and the former vice president of Uganda, H.E. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, welcomed the president upon his arrival and showed him a variety of agricultural products, including coffee plantations, pineapple plantations, nursery beds, and a solar irrigation power plant that pumps water to the tank used for watering the agricultural farm.

President Museveni thanked the farmers during his speech for being submissive and improving their lives by adopting government development initiatives like Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UDCA).

He then instructed the farmers to increase the value of their produce so they could gain more from their labor.
Mr. Kabito, who was speaking on behalf of the farmers, informed the President that they have 20 acres of coffee plantations, 40 acres of pineapple plantations, 2.5 acres of passion fruit plantations, and 0.5 acres of nursery beds.

In regards to earnings, Mr. Kabito informed President Museveni that utilizing the newly developed way of farming, they now make Shs.23m per year in one acre of land with 1300 coffee plantings, as opposed to the Shs.9m they used to earn from 450 coffee plantations using the previous approach. He indicated that 450–1300 coffee seedlings are planted on each acre. He continued by saying that the new approach might aid in raising Uganda’s coffee production. They have 40 acres of pineapples and produce Shs.12 million annually.

Kabito, a role model for farmers, also thanked the President for coming. He mentioned that they are able to support themselves with modern farming, and that their goal is to transition the area from subsistence to commercial farming. He continued by saying that in order to fulfill their mission, they first train the people who buy seedlings, educate the neighborhood about the need for a mentality shift, then hire 20 people.

He thanked the President for launching initiatives like Operation Wealth Creation, which provided him with 20,000 pineapple plants and 1000 coffee seedlings, and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority, which has altered his life and the community.

He finished by telling the President about the difficulties they face when growing their goods and moving it to the market. He said that they often spend 50% to 60% of the budget on delivering their product, so it’s important to thank him for sparing them the trouble by promising to purchase them a tractor.
