Young Tailor Transforms Lives in Bukedi

Coming from a humble background dependent on subsistence farming, Logose discovered her passion and skill in tailoring, which propelled her to take significant steps toward community empowerment.

After finishing the six-month program at the Bukedi Zonal Industrial Hub in Kibuku district, a 20-year-old girl from Budaka district, Bukedi sub-region, has changed the game for many of her colleagues.

Shortly after finishing her tailoring instruction, Jane Logose, a resident of Budaka Town Council, Bwase Parish, and Naigobya hamlet in Budaka area, recognized her talent and aspiration.

Logose, who comes from a peasant family that relies solely on subsistence farming for their livelihood, recently informed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni about her efforts to provide free training to other teenagers.

“Mr. President, after completing my training here, I was hired by a certain design firm and made Shs 10,000 apiece. I also provide my fellow students with skills training throughout the weekend young people so that they can also become self-reliant,” Logose narrated.

Logose claims that in order to purchase an antique sewing machine, which she now uses to instruct her fellow teenagers, she had to sell her one goat.

“With the meager income I receive from my job, I am now providing for my family and myself,” Logose informed the President.

After finishing training from the 19 Presidential Skilling Hubs, Logose is just one of many young people throughout Uganda whose ambitions and future have come true.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni backed Logose’s fight with Shs7Million during the opening of Bukedi Zonal Industrial Hub on Sunday, November 10th, 2024, so she could buy new equipment and increase skill-building possibilities for other young people in her community.

The president stated that the government will begin giving start-up kits to trainees who finish their skilling programs from various training hubs and urged young people to be brave in life and maintain their health. This will allow them to launch their companies and give other young people jobs.

The State House Controller, Jane Barekye, called this a significant step in improving the lives of young people.

“The President’s dedication to providing accessible, high-quality education and vocational training, especially for those who might otherwise be left behind due to financial challenges, is reflected in these industrial hubs,” Barekye stated.

She claims that by providing free skill-building opportunities in every area, the President hopes to end the school dropout cycle and provide young people useful skills they need to thrive in the modern workforce.

More than 200 young people are presently receiving training at Bukedi Zonal Training Hub in areas like as metal fabrication, shoemaking, bakery, hair styling, fashion design, carpentry and joinery, and building and construction.

The objective is to make sure that underprivileged kids take advantage of the presidential initiative from different centers so they can work for themselves.

Students take an assessment test administered by the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) at the conclusion of the six-month course. In lieu of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), they receive certificates.
