Ms Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister, has stated that the government will promote young innovators in order to increase job prospects in the country.

Ms Nabbanja stated that the students have “amazing ideas” but require cash to assist them, and she proposed a fund specifically for young innovators.

“I’ve seen a number of young people come up with good innovations; on behalf of the government, I will bring this concern to Cabinet so we can develop a policy,” she said.

She was speaking at the weekend’s conclusion of the second edition of the six-day National Agricultural Show at Jinja Showground.

She also promised to help Joseph Ssentongo, a student at Janani Schools in Luwero who developed a unique technique for disease control by using a drone.

Ms Nabbanja’s statement came in response to a call by the president of the Uganda National Farmers Federation (UNFFE), Dr Dick Nuwamanya Kamuganga, for support for young innovators.

“We need government support; we will follow all innovations from all young people up to the village level.” “We have a presence as UNFFE in 70,000 villages across the country,” Dr Kamuganga explained.

“We have ICT for farmers, and we can digitize these innovations,” he added. Funding will be made available to encourage discoveries by our own children, which will help the President’s agro-industrialization goal.”

Maj Gen Sam Kavuma, the deputy coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), who was represented by Lt Col Oguli Dhamuzungu, the Busoga Sub-region zonal commander, proposed the establishment of a ministry accountable for young innovators’ innovations so that they do not go to waste if unfunded.

Mr George Mutekanga, the Assistant Commissioner-in-charge of private schools and institutions of higher learning at the Ministry of Education and Sports, stated that the show, which was themed ’empowering young entrepreneurship,’ drew 100,000 students from 110 schools across the country.
