The minister of local government, Rapheal Magyezi, has met the heads of the Parish Development Model (PDM) SACCOs in Kawempe division in Kampala. He met them on November 3, 2023, at the National ICT Innovation in Nakawa.
Magyezi added that PDM beneficiaries in Kampala had never gotten any coin of their PDM money when it was issued by the government, that is why he decided to meet these leaders to confirm whether their SACCOs and their respective beneficiaries have received it.
Magyezi has asked the Kawempe PDM SACCO leaders to put forth a lot of effort to make sure that each beneficiary gets this money. He cautioned them, nevertheless, not to give this money to just their family members.
“It is really unfair if a PDM SACCO chairperson gives this money to his wife, children, and uncle among his other relatives”, he continued.
During their conversation with Magyezi, the PDM SACCO leaders of Kawempe informed him that they do not have an integrated system that can notify them when a SACCO member has received their money from the banks and the PDM SACCO chairpersons’ monitoring system. As of right moment, the monitoring system continues to provide an incorrect indication that a member has not yet received his PDM money, even after the member takes it out of his bank account.
The PDM leaders also brought up the issue of not having enough pens, laptops, offices, or reams of paper to Magyezi. In response to their worries, Magyezi assured them that each PDM SACCO would receive a computer from the government, and that the corresponding PDM SACCO committees would also receive some funding.
There are 98 PDM SACCOs in Kampala, 22 of which are in the Kawempe division, and all of them have got their funding, according to Asia Nabisere Kinaabi, the PDM coordinator for Kampala. According to Kinaabi, the PDM SACCOs in Kampala have received a total of sh9.7b in funding.
