Suja K. Menon, the Joint Secretary/Director General for the Ministry of External Affairs of India in charge of Lines of Credit, has completed a three-day business visit to Uganda.

The Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Upender Singh Rawat, stated that Suja’s visit was to monitor progress on the utilization of two lines of credit granted by the Government of India and defined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his State visit to Uganda in 2018.

The financing offer was made to both the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.

In response to India’s offer, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries has submitted a Solar Irrigation Systems Project, which is a priority area for the Ugandan government in order to improve the Parish Development Model’s efficiency and agricultural productivity.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has proposed two projects for consideration: (i) the 220kv Bujagaali-Tororo Transmission Line project (127km), which requires sh59 billion in finance, and (ii) the Karuma-Nimule-(411Km) Nimule-Juba (301km) Transmission Line.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Amb. Elly Kamahungye, Director for Regional and International Economic Affairs, organized on-site assessments for two of the proposed projects in agricultural and energy.

Deputy Mayor Fazira Kauma and Town Clerk Edward Lwanga warmly welcomed the India delegation to the Jinja City Council Offices.

Given the history of Indian descent in Jinja, Kauma encouraged the India delegation to consider more people-to-people projects in tourism, culture, and the digital economy, as well as training and exchange programs and city twinning.
