Politicians in Gulu District who profited from the Emyooga Program have been given till Wednesday, August 30 to repay the debt of 50 million shillings.

The District Emyooga Taskforce issued the ultimatum ahead of its planned operation on loan defaulters under the Emyooga.

According to Patrick Kitara, the Gulu district focal point person for the Emyooga program, the operation would begin with the Politicians’ group because it is one of the worst performers in terms of loan recovery.

Kitara reported that the district distributed 579.4 million shillings to various groups in 2021, but only 163 million shillings had been returned, hampered the program’s success.

Produce dealers, saloon operators, and boda-boda riders are also among the program’s underperformers.

Meanwhile, Lt. (Rtd) Alfred Ocaya, chairperson of the Gulu Veterans’ Association, says his organization’s members are making good use of the money because it arrived at a critical time.

Ocaya stated that the gang borrowed the loan twice and paid it back to zero.

With over 150 members, the club is now expanding into beekeeping, poultry keeping, piggery, and maize cultivation on a huge scale.
