Government Launches ICT Innovation Hub at Soroti University

Soroti University received 250 million shillings in initial funding from the ICT ministry for the center's creation. During the launch, Dr. Baryomunsi reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the hub. SOROTI – Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the information minister, has inaugurated a regional innovation cluster at Soroti University in the city.

The debut on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, is part of the government’s goal to promote ICT innovation and digital skills across the country, as well as to assist the construction of regional centers.

Currently, regional hubs have been established in Kabale and Muni universities, with the most recent addition being in Soroti.

The ICT ministry provided Soroti University with 250 million shillings as beginning funding to create the center in the fiscal year 2022/2023.

While officiating at the ICT hub’s launch, Baryomunsi stated that the government is dedicated to continuing to assist it.

Meanwhile, Prof. Robert Ikoja, vice-chancellor of Soroti University, stated that the hub is expected to bridge the region’s skills deficit.

The project manager, Prof Christopher Egau, stated that the ICT hub will spark Teso’s digital revolution.

Amina Zawede, permanent secretary of the ICT ministry, urged the university to develop packages to attract female students to pursue careers in information and communication technology.
